Italy's education minister, Giuseppe Valditara, said authorities carried out roughly 3,000 checks across 276 schools between February and the time of his remarks, according to Tgcom24. Dozens of weapons were seized during the operation, the outlet reported.
Valditara's comments followed the stabbing of a teacher, Il Sole 24 ORE reported, which gave the figures a fresh public focus. The minister framed the checks as part of a broader effort to tighten security inside Italian schools.
The numbers have also drawn attention to a measure that has not been put into practice. La Repubblica reported that a circular providing for metal detectors in schools has never been implemented, meaning the scanners are not in use despite the provision.
